Walking to Wellness

Healthy West Chicago is excited to launch a new community walkability campaign focused on making it easier, safer, and more enjoyable for people of all ages to move throughout West Chicago.

Over the past four months, Healthy West Chicago has been working to build this effort with partners across the community. We have been meeting with representatives from local government, schools, healthcare and mental health organizations, community groups, and other local partners to better understand both the opportunities and the challenges related to walking and movement in West Chicago. These conversations are helping us look at walkability not just as an infrastructure issue, but as an important part of community health and well-being.

Walking is one of the simplest ways we can support our health. Regular movement can help strengthen our hearts, improve energy, support a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of chronic health conditions. Just as importantly, walking and spending time outdoors can help reduce stress, improve mood, support mental health, and create more opportunities to connect with our neighbors and our community.

But being active also depends on the places around us. Are there sidewalks where you need them? Do you feel safe crossing the street? Are there places you enjoy walking or places where walking is difficult? What would make it easier for you and your family to walk, roll, or move around West Chicago?

Healthy West Chicago has launched an online community feedback form where residents can share their experiences, concerns, and ideas about walkability in West Chicago:

👉 Share your feedback here

Over the coming months, we will continue listening to residents, working with community partners, and identifying opportunities to encourage walking and improve walkability throughout the community. Your feedback will help us better understand what is working, where barriers exist, and what changes or improvements could have the greatest impact. Over the next several months, we will also be creating additional opportunities for West Chicago residents to participate in this work and share ideas about places they would like to see improved.

Together, we can continue building a healthier, more connected, and more walkable West Chicago.
